    Alec Guinness, agraciado com o titulo de "Sir" em 1960, entusiasmou os espectadores dos teatros londrinos antes de eclodir a Segunda Guerra Mundial (sobretudo no Old Vic), com suas interpretações de Shakespeare, nas quais demonstrou suas qualidades de ator polivalente. Em As Oito Vítimas (1949) chegou a interpretar o papel de oito personagens diferentes da mesma família. Os filmes "monumentais" de David Lean trouxeram-lhe grandes êxitos, como Oliver Twist (1948), Lawrence da Arábia (1962), com Peter O'Toole e Anthony Quinn, Doutor Jivago (1965), com Omar Sharif, e agem para a Índia (1984). Ambos, diretor e ator, seriam premiados com o Oscar pelo filme A Ponte do Rio Kwai. Conquistou depois muitos fãs jovens pelos papéis secundários que desempenhou na série Guerra nas Estrelas. Em 1989, recebeu um Oscar pelo conjunto de sua carreira e, em 1989, o Urso de Ouro do Festival de Berlim. Publicou em 1986 uma autobiografia, Blessings in Disguise.
