    Seu verdadeiro nome era Benjamin David G. Goodman. Elevou o "jazz" à categoria de música culta e foi o primeiro músico deste gênero a atuar no Carnegie Hall de Chicago, em 1938. Integrou músicos negros em sua orquestra, caso de Lionel Hampton, rompendo com os preconceitos raciais dominantes. Seu êxito ocorreu em pleno apogeu da "era do swing", da qual foi considerado rei. O swing era um subgênero do jazz que, interpretado por grandes orquestras (entre as quais a de Benny Goodman triunfou), atraiu muitos espectadores entre 1934 e 1950. Durante esse período foi sem dúvida a mais célebre "big band", e os momentos mais esperados de seus concertos eram os solos de clarinete do líder. Goodman tocou também em pequenos conjuntos após a dissolução de sua orquestra. Sua participação no âmbito da música culta, com interpretações dos concertos para clarinete de Mozart, levou-o a alcançar um outro tipo de público.
