Ernest Miller Hemingway nasceu em 1899, em Oak Park, Illinois (EUA). Filho de um médico da zona rural, cresceu em contato com um ambiente pobre e rude, que conheceu ao acompanhar o trabalho do pai na região. Esse ambiente foi descrito em seu livro de contos In Our Time (1925).

Trabalhando como repórter, Hemingway alista-se no exército italiano em 1916 e é gravemente ferido na frente de batalha. Ao deixar o hospital, a a trabalhar como correspondente em Paris. Em 1926, publica O Sol Também Se Levanta, livro que obteria um sucesso surpreendente.

Em 1929, publica Adeus às Armas, que descreve a experiência militar de seu autor na Itália.

Vai para a Espanha, onde produz Morte à Tarde (1932), sobre as touradas; faz caçadas na África Central, que relata em As Verdes Colinas da África (1935); participa da Guerra Civil Espanhola e escreve Por Quem os Sinos Dobram (1940); de suas experiências como pescador em Cuba, surge O Velho e o Mar (1952), livro que lhe rendeu o Prêmio Pulitzer.

Ganhador do Nobel de Literatura (1954), Hemingway suicidou-se em sua casa de Ketchum, em Idaho (EUA), em 1961.
