Leonard Gary Oldman nasceu em uma família humilde, e desde cedo mostrou interesse por cinema e teatro. Estudou no Bruford Drama College e, depois, na Greenwich Young People's Theatre. Durante a década de 1980, Oldamn atuou em diversas produções de teatro.

Sua estréia no cinema aconteceu na cinebiografia de Sid Vicious, um dos componentes do grupo punk Sex Pistols. Depois, realizou vários filmes, a maioria alternativos, até estrear, sob a direção de Stephen Frears, em "Prick up your ears" ("O amor não tem sexo"), no ano de 1987, quando atuou ao lado de Alfred Molina e Vanessa Redgrave.

Mas a fama viria na década seguinte. Já em Hollywood, Gary Oldman atuaria em "Drácula, de Bram Stoker", no papel do famoso vampiro, sob a direção de Francis Ford Coppola e ao lado de Winona Ryder.

A seguir, Oldman trabalharia, dentre outros filmes, em "Amor à queima-roupa" ("True Romance"), de Tony Scott (1993), "Minha Amada Imortal" ("Immortal Beloved"), "A Letra Escarlate" ("The Scarlet Letter"), "O Quinto Elemento" ("The Fifth Element") e "A conspiração" ("The Contender"), no papel do republicano conservador Sheldon Runyon.

Em 2001, sob a direção de Ridley Scott, Oldman atuou em "Hannibal", irreconhecível mas brilhante no papel do pedófilo Mason Verger. Sua interpretação mais ousada, contudo, foi, certamente, em "Tiptoes", de Matthew Bright, onde faz o papel de Rolfe, um anão.

Seus últimos trabalhos foram em "Batman Begins" e "Batman - The Dark Knight" - no papel do comissário Gordon - e na série "Harry Potter", como Sirius Black.

Famoso por ser um perfeccionista, dizem que Oldman esbofeteava a si mesmo quando, por algum motivo, se distraía durante os ensaios de "Drácula". Ele é um dos poucos atores que consegue expressar cerca de trinta sotaques ou entonações diferentes com perfeição.

Gary Oldman casou-se quatro vezes: com Lesley Manville (1988-1990), Uma Thurman (1990-1992) e Donya Fiorentino (1997-2001); em 2008, com a cantora de jazz Alexandra Edenborough. Tem três filhos.
