Desde criança dava mostras de seu virtuosismo ao piano e muito cedo decidiu dedicar-se à regência, tornando-se, após o final da Segunda Guerra Mundial, um regente de orquestra unanimemente aclamado. Solti gravou mais de 250 discos, incluindo grande número de interpretações inovadoras que abriram novas perspectivas no âmbito musical (por exemplo, em obras de Richard Wagner e de Joseph Haydn). Em 1939, exilou-se na Suíça, onde brilhou como pianista, sendo nomeado, em 1944, maestro da Orquestra Radiofônica da Suíça. Em 1946, assumiu a direção da Ópera de Munique; em 1952, a de Frankfurt; e, em 1961, a do Covent Garden de Londres. A partir de 1970, dirigiu durante mais de 20 anos a Orquestra Sinfônica de Chicago, com a qual gravou a maioria de seus discos. A partir de 1992, ou também a dirigir a orquestra de Salzburgo. Foi nomeado sir em 1971.
