    Simenon foi um dos autores mais produtivos do mundo. Sua obra completa é composta por cerca de 400 romances, a maioria dos quais publicada sob diferentes pseudônimos. É famoso o personagem Maigret, comissário de polícia parisiense, identificado pelo eterno cachimbo, pela intuição e pela capacidade de introspecção psicológica da mente do delinqüente. Maigret tornou-se, desde sua criação, em 1931, uma das figuras literárias mais célebres do século XX. Foram publicados 85 romances com Maigret, alguns dos quais adaptados ao cinema. Simenon foi autor também de cerca de 130 romances denominados "não Maigrets". A partir de 1970, dedicou-se a escrever a autobiografia Memórias Íntimas, publicada em 1981.
