    Bachmann começou a destacar-se como poetisa após ter estudado filosofia. Em O Tempo Adiado (1953), poemas de grande conteúdo metafórico e de certo hermetismo, Bachmann faz do amor a única via de salvação para o homem perdido de saudade. Seu romance inacabado Malina (1971, adaptado para o cinema em 1990) permaneceu como o único elemento representativo de um ciclo narrativo que se intitularia Formas de Morrer. Membro do Grupo 47, escreveu operetas para Hans Werner Henze, bem como algumas peças radiofônicas. Em 1964 recebeu, em reconhecimento da sua obra, o Prêmio Georg-Büchner, o mais prestigioso prêmio das letras alemãs. Desde 1977, realiza-se na sua cidade natal um concurso literário que recebeu o seu nome.
