    Aos 20 anos, pertencia à Comédie Française (até 1952), sendo conhecida no mundo do teatro antes de rodar os primeiros filmes com os diretores da nouvelle vague: trabalhou com Louis Malle em Fim-de-Semana no Elevador (1957) e Os Amantes (1958), e com François Truffaut em Jules e Jim (1961) e A Noiva Estava de Luto (1967). Nestes e em outros filmes (incluindo as colaborações com Luis Buñuel e Orson Welles), Jeanne Moreau representa o papel típico da mulher de caráter complexo dotada de um misterioso halo de erotismo. Algumas das interpretações nos anos de 1980 foram objeto de excelentes críticas, caso de Querelle (1982) realizado por Rainer Fassbinder, e Até o Fim do Mundo de Wim Wenders. Sua representação da czarina Isabel foi a mais destacada da epopéia histórica Catarina, a Grande (1995).
