As suas versões cinematográficas de obras literárias, transformadas em imagens apaixonadas que recriam a morte e a decadência, deram-lhe a fama internacional. "O Leopardo" (1962), que recria a mudança de rumo da nobreza siciliana para a nova sociedade burguesa, e "Morte em Veneza", a adaptação do romance de Thomas Mann que narra os últimos dias de um músico na cidade dos canais, são os seus filmes mais conhecidos. Outros de seus filmes são "Noites Brancas" (1957), baseado num romance de Fiodor Dostoievski, e "O Estrangeiro" (1967), inspirado no título homônimo de Albert Camus. Criador de gado na juventude, Visconti foi politicamente antifascista. Co-fundador e um dos principais representantes do neo-realismo italiano, denunciou a realidade social por meio de uma elaboração acentuadamente estética dos seus filmes. Em "Luís da Baviera" (1972), narra a vida do idealista monarca. Visconti levou também à cena obras teatrais, algumas delas musicais. Em sua filmografia, destacam-se ainda "Rocco e seus Irmãos" (1960), "Sedução da Carne" (1954) e "Violência e Paixão" (1974).
