José Martins Fontes foi alfabetizado pela mãe. Depois de cursar o secundário em Jacareí (SP), estudou medicina no Rio de Janeiro, quando começa a militar na imprensa: trabalhou na Gazeta de Notícias, em O País, na revista A Careta, etc.

Formado médico, trabalha no Hospital dos Alienados, no Rio de Janeiro. Em 1908, participou da Comissão de Obras do Acre - e publicou um estudo sobre a higiene rural daquele território. Em 1910, foi nomeado chefe da Assistência Escolar da Prefeitura do Rio de Janeiro.

Em 1915, voltou a viver em Santos, sua cidade natal, onde se dedicou à medicina e à literatura. Em 1930 foi eleito sócio-correspondente da Academia de Ciências de Lisboa.

Exuberância e positivismo

Segundo Péricles Eugênio da Silva Ramos, Martins Fontes "escapou à condição de caudatário do Parnasianismo [...]. Voz tropical, vibrante, e a seu modo libertária, não poderiam contê-la, também, os murmúrios do Simbolismo claustral e de má aclimação no Brasil. No anseio de conquistar uma expressão pessoal, e de inovar, cultivou as mais variadas formas e inventou grande cópia de palavras".

Os primeiros versos de Martins Fontes revelam uma poesia exuberante, cheia de vontade de viver, enquanto os da última fase são inspirados pela filosofia positivista.
