Pearl Seydenstricker Buck recebeu em 1938 o Prêmio Nobel da Literatura, na qualidade de embaixadora da cultura chinesa no mundo ocidental. Suas obras transportam-nos para a China da revolução comunista, local a que chegou como filha de um missionário. Buck viveu na China até 1935, embora não tivesse aí residido ininterruptamente, pois foi em seu próprio país que efetuou os estudos universitários. Ao longo de dez anos foi professora de Literatura Inglesa em Nanquim. Entre as suas obras mais populares, destacam-se A Boa Terra (1931), Os Filhos de Wang-Lung (1932) e A Casa Dividida (1935).
