Sellers adquiriu fama mundial como ator cômico com seu papel de Inspetor Clouseau em A Pantera Cor-de-Rosa (1963), contracenando com David Niven. O filme, conhecido ainda pela célebre trilha sonora, teve diversas seqüências, como A Volta da Pantera Cor-de-Rosa (1974). Outros títulos importantes de sua filmografia são O Quinteto da Morte (1955) e Dr. Fantástico (1963, dirigido por Stanley Kubrick). Seu filme de maior qualidade cinematográfica é, provavelmente, Muito Além do Jardim (1979), no qual interpreta uma personagem intelectualmente limitada, obcecada por televisão, que ascende involuntariamente ao establishment norte-americano.
