Lacoste, famoso tenista da década de 20 e 30, ganhou sete torneios do Grand Slam. Pertenceu aos lendários "quatro mosqueteiros", com Jean Borotra, Henri Cochet e Jacques Brugnon, que defenderam seu país em seis torneios seguidos da Taça Davis. Mais tarde, investiu os rendimentos de sua carreira na fabricação de roupa esportiva, que se destacou pela marca do "crocodilo verde", apelido concedido por seu sacrifício nos treinos. Popularizou as camisetas pólo, peças que desbancaram as tradicionais camisas de colarinho duro, vendendo cerca de 300 mil unidades em 1939. Mais tarde, Lacoste ampliou suas criações, produzindo roupas informais e esportivas.
