Filho de um rico corretor de seguros e jogador, Altman foi educado em escolas jesuítas e diplomou-se em matemática. Serviu na Academia Militar de Wentworth, na cidade de Lexington. Em 1945, aos 20 anos de idade, participou da Segunda Guerra Mundial como piloto de bombardeiros.

Enquanto servia na Força Aérea na Califórnia, teve contato com o mundo cinematográfico de Hollywood. Mudou-se para Los Angeles, com a idéia de se preparar para ser diretor.

Na década de 1950, Altman dirigiu o filme independente "Os Delinqüentes" e o documentário "The James Dean Story". O sucesso veio com "M.A.S.H." (1970), que contava a história de uma equipe médica durante a Guerra da Coréia. O resultado rendeu ao diretor a Palma de Ouro, em Cannes, além de uma indicação ao Oscar.

Uma das características de Altman era transmitir em suas produções uma visão crítica da sociedade americana. Além de "M.A.S.H.", outros trabalhos destacados são "O Jogador" (1992), que também conquistou um prêmio em Cannes, "Short Cuts - Cenas da Vida" (1993), "Prêt-à-Porter" (1994) e "Assassinato em Gosford Park" (2001). Seu último trabalhos foi "A Última Noite" (2006), com Meryl Streep.

Altman recebeu um Oscar honorário pelo conjunto da sua obra, que se caracteriza por fugir aos cânones hollywoodianos. Além dos prêmios no Festival de Cannes, ganhou o Leão de Ouro especial no Festival de Veneza, em reconhecimento a sua carreira.

Robert Altman foi casado três vezes e deixou cinco filhos.
