Ronald William Howard é filho da atriz Jean Speegle Howard e do diretor, escritor e ator Rance Howard. Seu irmão caçula, Clint Howard, é um reconhecido ator. A ascendência familiar de Ron é múltipla: holandesa, escocesa, inglesa, irlandesa, alemã e cherokee.

Ron Howard estudou na John Burroughs High School e, depois, Escola de Cinematografia da Universidade da Califórnia do Sul, mas não chegou a terminar o curso.

Howard começou sua carreira de ator interpretando o personagem Winthrop Paroo, na versão cinematográfica de "The Music Man", com Robert Preston e Shirley Jones. Depois desse projeto, participou na série de televisão "The Andy Griffith Show" e apareceu no filme "The Courtship of Eddie's Father", com Glenn Ford.

Sua participação mais notável talvez seja na série M*A*S*H, interpretando um soldado na Guerra da Coréia. Mas ele também é conhecido por atuar na série "Happy Days", quando interpretou Richie Cunningham. Ao mesmo tempo, participou do filme "Loucuras de verão", dirigido por George Lucas, interpretando Steve Bollander.

Depois de deixar a série "Happy Days", Ron dirigiu várias séries de televisão. Seu grande salto como diretor ocorreu ao dirigir a comédia "Night Shift", com Michael Keaton e Shelley Long.

Oscar de melhor diretor

Ron Howard dirigiu inúmeros filmes de renome, como "Splash - uma sereia em minha vida", "Willow - na terra da magia", "Cocoon", "Apolo 13" (indicado ao Oscar) e "Cinderella Man", sobre o boxeador James J. Braddock.

Seu filme mais importante, contudo, é "Uma mente brilhante", pelo qual ganhou o Oscar de melhor diretor em 2001. Esse trabalho também recebeu o Oscar de melhor filme. Depois, Ron adaptou o livro "O Código da Vinci" para o cinema. E prepara a continuação: "Anjos e demônios".

Em 2009, Ron Howard foi indicado ao Oscar de melhor diretor por seu filme "Frost/Nixon", baseado na peça homônima de Peter Morgan, que dramatiza as entrevistas de tevê realizadas, em 1977, pelo jornalista David Frost com o então presidente dos Estados Unidos, Richard Nixon.
