    Seu verdadeiro nome era Stanley Getz. A bossa nova brasileira deve grande parte de seu êxito comercial dos anos 60 a Stan Getz. A canção que dá título a seu álbum Garota de Ipanema (1964), de autoria de Tom Jobim e Vinícius de Moraes, premiado com um dos 11 Grammy recebidos ao longo de sua carreira, foi um grande sucesso da bossa nova, tendo várias versões. Músico desde jovem em muitas "big bands", aderiu a partir de 1947 ao chamado cool jazz, representado pelo Four-Brothers-Sound da orquestra de Woody Herman. É conhecido por esse nome o som típico interpretado por quatro saxofones tenores e um barítono popularizado pelos Four-Brothers (1947). Getz, que se caracteriza por sua brilhante capacidade de improvisação, foi um dos mais célebres intérpretes de saxofone tenor.
