    Como líder da luta pela independência contra o Japão, que anexara a Coréia em 1910, Rhee chefiou, de 1919 a 1939, o Governo coreano no exílio em Xangai. Quando terminou a Segunda Guerra Mundial, regressou à Coréia do Sul com tropas norte-americanas e, como presidente da República e anticomunista convicto, lutou contra o regime da Coréia do Norte. Apesar do auxílio norte-americano durante a Guerra da Coréia (1950-1953), não conseguiu unificar o país. Rhee instaurou um regime autoritário e policial e, graças ao apoio dos Estados Unidos, criou os fundamentos do espetacular desenvolvimento econômico da Coréia do Sul. Em 1960, diversas fraudes eleitorais, seguidas de distúrbios no interior do país, obrigaram-no a renunciar e a exilar-se.
