Sinclair foi um dos principais representantes dos chamados "Muckrackers" ("os que se espojam na lama"), um grupo assim denominado pelo presidente Theodore Roosevelt, caracterizado pelo empenho na denúncia de escândalos e injustiças e pela defesa de uma mudança no comportamento social. Escreveu diversos romances sobre a corrupção (Metropolis, 1908, King Coal, 1917) e ensaios políticos (entre os quais We People in America and How we Ended Poverty, 1935). A repercussão de suas obras permitiu a luta pela eliminação das maiores injustiças sociais. Destaca-se nesse sentido sua obra The Jungle (1906), na qual se refletem as indignas condições de trabalho nos matadouros de Chicago. Juntamente com Jack London e Sinclair Lewis, pertenceu à comunidade socialista Helicon Hall-Farm, que oferecia apoio ativo à política do New Deal de Franklin D. Roosevelt. Foi também candidato a diversos cargos públicos. Desfrutou de muito êxito a série consagrada ao agente Lanny-Budd, impregnada de um tom político moderado e publicada em 11 volumes entre 1940 e 1953. Trata-se de um conjunto de romances, cuja ação se a em cidades como Washington, Moscou, Paris, Londres ou Berlim da Primeira Guerra Mundial até a Guerra Fria, nos anos de 1950, e nos quais a história contemporânea surge aliada à aventura, ao amor e ao crime.
