    Seu verdadeiro nome era Woodrow Wilson Guthrie. Das centenas de canções escritas por Guthrie, que pertencem ao acervo da moderna lírica norte-americana, a mais conhecida é sem dúvida This Land is Your Land (Esta Terra é Sua Terra). Durante a Grande Depressão e a crise econômica dos anos 30 tornou-se cantor itinerante e em suas canções descrevia a miséria dos trabalhadores e o desenraizamento dos agricultores que tiveram de abandonar suas terras do Midwest. Ao lado de Pete Seeger, Guthrie cantou desde 1940 nos Almanac Singers, em prol da filiação dos trabalhadores nos sindicatos e contra Adolf Hitler. Datam dessa época suas primeiras gravações e memórias, intituladas Born for Glory (Nascido para a Glória, 1943), nas quais descreve seus anos errantes. Sua vida e sua música serviram de fonte de inspiração ao movimento hippie, tornando-se um modelo para artistas como Bob Dylan e Joan Baez.
